Tropical Storm Basyang

On July 12, 4 am, the Low Pressure Area (LPA) spotted on East of Visayas intensified into a tropical depression and named it “Basyang” with an international name “Conson.”

“Basyang” stayed within Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) for three days and exited July 15.

Although it caused minimal damage as compared to other cyclones that crossed the country, “Basyang” still affected hundreds of thousands of families.

In the National Disaster Coordinating Council’s final report, “Basyang” affected a total of 114,905 families or 585,317 persons from 12 provinces in Regions III, IV-A, V, and NCR. “Basyang” also left 102 deaths, 91 injuries and 45 missing from Regions III, IV-A and V, and 1 person missing from Region VI.

“Basyang” dealt PhP377.826M damages to agriculuture and infrastructure.

In the NDCC report, at least 161 school buildings were damaged amounting to at least PhP44,320,000 while damaged roads and bridges, and health facilities are about PhP94.246M.

On the other hand, the damage on agriculture was amounting to PhP239,409,880.00.

Aside from that, a Luzon-wide power outages occurred because of the tripping of north-to-south transmission backbone of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines. Meralco has already restored power services by July 16.
