Update on Mayon and Taal Volcanoes

14 Oct. 2010

Alert Level 1 is in effect over Mayon Volcano. The Philippine Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) recorded six volcanic earthquakes and two (2) rockfall events from October 13 to 14 with steaming activities going from weak-moderate to moderate. Previously, Phivolcs recorded twenty-six (26) volcanic earthquakes and ten (10) rockfall events from October 4 to 10.

PHIVOLCS recommend the public not to enter the six-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) “due to continuing threat from sudden small explosions and rockfalls from the upper and middle slopes of the volcano” (NDRRMC). The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) also advise the public to avoid active river channels and those areas perennially identified lahar zone.

Meanwhile, Taal Volcano remains at Alert Level 1. The whole volcano island is declared as PDZ and prohibiting settlement on the said area. PHIVOLCS recorded thirteen (13) volcanic quakes from October 13-14. The NDRRMC also said that the Main Crater is strictly off-limits because sudden steam explosions may occur and “high concentration of toxic may accumulate.”
