COMMUNITY PROJECTS AND ACTIVITIES

IMPROVEMENT OF ARENAS BASKETBALL COURT – March

The improvement of the Arenas Basketball Court was conducted by CNDR in cooperation with the Villa Arenas Youth Club.  This undertaking was also made possible with the participation of the community youth and leaders.

The idea of improving the Arenas Basketball Court was a welcome idea to the community as the court has been a common place for the youth in whiling away their time.  Hence, this is considered as contributory in ensuring that the youth of Villa Arenas are veered away from illegal and anti-social activities.  More particularly, improvements included lighting and painting of the floor.  In recognition of CNDR’s contribution in this undertaking, CNDR’s logo was painted on the court’s flooring which is actually visible on Google earth.

DE-CLOGGING OF OPEN DRAINAGE SYSTEM IN VILLA ARENAS – September

De-clogging open drainage systems in Villa Arenas has always been more difficult to undertake when compared with doing the same project in Buensuceso.  For one, it is more difficult to mobilize volunteers and the relations of the community with barangay officials are relatively more tensed.

However, CNDR and its partners believe that this undertaking is very important for the community in order to maintain the drainage system and avoid this to serve as breeding grounds of mosquitoes as well as prevent possible incidents of flooding and spread of diseases.  As such, CNDR and its partners vow to regularly conduct de-clogging projects.

All in all, the project was still a success and covered the open drainage systems along the main road and the major exit point of the drainage system.  CNDR’s partners in this project are the Barangay Council, Barangay Health Workers and the Bantay Bayan.

FABRICATION OF DRAINAGE COVER

The fabrication of drainage cover was a very welcome project in Buensuceso.  Undertaking did not only mean ensuring that the drainage system is maintained but it also meant preventing untoward incidents from occurring especially for the children.

The Buensuceso Multi-Purpose Cooperative is CNDR’s main partner in this project.  In the beginning, it was difficult to mobilize volunteers.  But when the community saw the first slabs covering the drainage system, it became easier to get them to participate in the project.

This project covered the Park and Playground 1 in April, the Community Facility 1 in May, and the Park and Playground 2 in August.  The last two phases of the project, however, encountered budget constraints and were not completed as desired.  This is now targeted for completion in 2011.

This project also became a venue for mobilizing CNDR staff.  Also, in recognition of the efforts of CNDR and BMPC, logos of the two organizations were printed in the fabricated drainage covers and were placed alternately on the system.

DE-CLOGGING OF BUENSUCESO OPEN DRAINAGE SYSTEM – May

The de-clogging operations for the open drainage system in Buensuceso have been a regular undertaking of CNDR and BMPC since 2007.  Over the years, the community has been receptive of this project especially when they see the amount of waste collected during the operations and they get to realize that the system has been really clogged up.  Aside from CNDR and BMPC, the project was made possible with the participation of the Barangay Council, although minimal, and the Sangguniang Kabataan.

However, this becomes a very tough project when local officials are not very much cooperative.  Particularly this year, the indifference of the Barangay Council resulted in a tighter budget and lesser participation of the community.  As such, the project only got to cover the drainage system along the main road.  It is important, therefore, that CNDR and BMPC are able to secure the commitment and cooperation of the Barangay Council in future de-clogging operations.

FENCING PROJECTS

The Fencing Projects in Buensuceso were aimed at maintaining the facilities and ensuring the safety and security of the BMPC and CNDR Office.  The project was undertaken in three phases in August, September, and October.

In general, the project encountered resistance from the residents leaving near the areas that were fenced more because of personal interests.  For the longest time, these areas that were fenced were very accessible to the residents and were utilized for personal purposes.  CNDR and BMPC had to provide enough time to discuss to them the objectives of the project.  Residents, later on, got to appreciate the project’s intentions especially when they saw that the project resulted in a more pleasant community.

The fencing project covered temporary fencing of the Community Facility 2, in partnership with BMPC; permanent and temporary fencing of the Park and Playground 2, in partnership with BMPC and the Citizen’s Crime Watch; and the improvement of the concrete fence of Park and Playground 1 in partnership with BMPC.

CHRISTMAS ACTIVITIES – December

It has been CNDR’s practice to regularly contribute in the Christmas activities of BMPC in recognition of BMPC’s efforts in sustaining the RAP in Buensuceso in partnership with CNDR.  These contributions started way back in 2008 and were in the form of Christmas groceries for the members of BMPC, raffle items for the Christmas raffle of BMPC and for the Christmas raffle of water concessionaires.

Although members and concessionaires get to receive very minimal Christmas gifts, this was very much appreciated by everyone.  Suffice it to say that however little we give, the community recognizes the genuine intentions of CNDR.

MONTHLY GRASS CUTTING

The monthly grass cutting project covers the open and reserved spaces and the sidewalks along the main road of Buensuceso. This is aimed at maintaining the cleanliness of the area.  This is conducted year round and in partnership with BMPC.

CNDR’s major contribution in this project was made in 2008 particularly in the purchase of the grass cutter.  From then on, CNDR’s contribution was mainly in providing for the gasoline while BMPC provides the maintenance of the grass cutter and manpower for the actual grass cutting.
