Floods, landslides, and tornado incidents in Regions VII, VIII, X, and XII

Continuous rains since March 15 caused floods and landslides in provinces of Bohol, Samar, Leyte, Southern Leyte, Western Samar and Misamis Oriental, and a tornado occurrence in South Cotabato and Lanao del Norte. This is due to wind convergence affecting the weather system of the country, mostly in the southern part.
In the latest report of NDRRMC, a total of 148,548 individuals or 29,682 families from 443 barangays were affected. Bulk of the affected families came from Region VIII, mostly from Tacloban in Leyte.
Regional Update
Flashflood in Region VII
Initially, 14 houses were partially damaged, while 1 was totally damaged in the province of Bohol. National Highway linking Brgy. Mayana and Calabasita, Jagna was rendered impassable due to debris caused by flooding. Road going to Brgy. Bugang Sur, Bilar rendered impassable due to flashflood.

In the province of Leyte, eight casualties were reported. A family of 7 was buried in a landslide incident in Brgy. Cabalawan, Tacloban City. Meanwhile, one from Palo, Leyte died due to electrocution during the flood incident.
Initially, there were 76 totally damaged houses, while 20 were partially damaged. Meanwhile, the Municipality of San Jose de Buan in Samar experienced power outage since 15 March 2011.
The province also reported 7.5M worth of damages to agriculture and 4M-worth of damages to infrastructure.
Unpassable Road Sections and Bridges/Alternate Route:
- Mahaplag – Sogod Road in Southern Leyte – closed to traffic and rendered not passable to all types of vehicles due to landslide along Maharlika Road km 1009+700 (dampou) to km1018+800 (sawong). Alternate route for Southern Leyte is the Abuyog-Silago Road and Mahaplag-Baybay-Bato-Sogod-Libagon Road. Clearing operations was temporarily stopped due to unfavourable weather condition
- Wright-Taft, Eastern Samar (Brgy. Malinao) – impassable to all types of vehicles due to flooding
- Junction Buenavista–Lawaan Road – impassable due to flooding (Brgy. San Vicente, Quinapondan, Eastern Samar)
- Camp 5–Junction Taft–Borongan Road – impassable due to flooding (Brgy. Malinao, San Pablo)
- Abuyog–Silago, Leyte Road – impassable due to landslide (Brgy. Tadoc, Abuyog, Leyte) blocking the Abuyog-Silago Road
- Bernard Reed Bridge in Palo, Leyte – vehicle traffic has been diverted to a bypass road
- Cong. Artemio Mate Avenue, Tacloban City
- Baybay to Mahaplag – closed to traffic due to impending landslide in the area. Detour route is Baybay to Bato and Junction Hima-angan Road to Silago-Abuyog Road going to Tacloban
- Bridge in Brgy. Mahayahay in Sogod, Southern Leyte is not passable to all types of vehicles
- Road in Brgy. Patani, Paranas going to Eastern Samar rendered not passable to all types of vehicles due to landslide.
Floods and tornado incident in Region X
Two houses are partially damaged in the province. Damages to livestock amounting to Php31,500.00 was reported in Brgys. Ulaliman, Hinigdaan and Amoros in El Salvador City, Misamis Oriental.
A tornado incident was also reported around 8 PM March 17 in Brgys. Mukas and Tabigue in Kolambugan, Lanao del Norte.
Around 45 families from Brgy. Mukas and 20 from Brgy. Tabigue evacuated to their respective Barangay Halls. Around 60 houses were partially damaged in this incident, while six are reported totally destroyed. Immediate assistance for food and non-food items, and materials for reconstruction of houses are needed.
Tornado occurence in Region XII
Another tornado hit Brgy. Malaya in Banga, South Cotabato last March 16. Twenty individuals or four families were affected. The damages to agriculture brought by the tornado were undetermined.
