Tropical Storm Karen

Typhoon Karen caused flooding in several areas in Manila leaving many students and commuters drenched and stranded as some of these areas became impassable to light vehicles around noon. At about the same time, Malacañang announced the suspension of classes.

The Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said knee-deep floods have affected McArthur Highway in Valenzuela and some areas in Caloocan.

In Quezon City, four persons were injured while more than 100 residents were displaced and remained at the barangay multi-purpose hall, when five-feet deep floodwaters swept into the Gawad Kalinga Village in Barangay Silangan after a protective wall gave way during a heavy downpour at around 7 am.

Cagayan was declared under a state of calamity by the provincial board last 22 August 2008 after Typhoon Karen destroyed Php 165 million worth of crops and infrastructure in the province. Karen destroyed some 400 houses, damaged 3,000 houses sending some 15,000 families to evacuation centers.

In Ilocos Sur, Gov. Deogracias Victor Savellano said the typhoon damaged at least Php 116 million worth of crop and infrastructure damages to the province.

At least 97,908 families or 429,450 persons were affected in 1,338 barangays, 118 municipalities and cities, 10 provinces in Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, and the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR). Evacuees have already returned to their homes.

All in all, Karen left at least 15 fatalities, 13 injured and 23 persons missing.

On Wednesday morning (20 August), a landslide in Ucab village in Itogon, Benguet buried three children while they were playing near their home in Ucab village in Itogon, Benguet. On the other hand, Petra Katadar, 72, was crushed to death by falling debris before dawn, while sleeping inside her room in Barangay Pinsao Pilot in Baguio.

A total of 1,023 houses were totally damaged, while 8,643 houses were partially damaged.

The estimated cost of damages to agriculture and infrastructure amounted to Php1,326,735,372.25 and Php282,548,900, respectively.
