About Community-Based Disaster Risk Management

After a few years of CNDR operations, the network has advocated preparedness as the most cost-effective response to a disaster situation. CNDR focuses on community-based disaster risk management which aims to increase and strengthen the communities’ capacities to prepare for, to cope with and to mitigate the adverse effects of disasters .

Community- Based Disaster Risk Management contributes to addressing the roots of people’s vulnerabilities and to transforming or removing the structures generating inequity. CBDRM projects of CNDR puts premium on the organizational capacity of the vulnerable sectors through the strengthening and formation of grassroots disaster response organizations.

CBDRM projects of CNDR focus on the following thematic activities:

  • Participatory risk assessment
  • Training on CBDRM and disaster preparedness
  • Public information materials for households and school children
  • Basic emergency preparedness and early warning equipment for communities and schools
  • Training of community trainers
  • Small-scale mitigation projects
  • Multi-hazard mapping and participatory CVA

Current community-based programs of CNDR include Advancing Safer Communities and Environments against Disasters (ASCEND)Food Facility Project, and Building Noah’s Ark in Flood-prone communities.
