Angat Dam to shut down for 3 days to ‘rest’
3 July
From July 7 to 9, the operations would be suspended to allow its machinery to “rest”. According to Rodolfo German, general manager of the Angat hydroelectric power plant, the plant operations would be suspended but the water supply would remain uninterrupted.
The plant will be shut down because of low water level which can cause damage to turbines. “It is most likely that the opening of the turbines will be damaged when air passes through the opening of the turbines, there will be cavitation (vapor pressure that damages plant equipment when hydroelectric plants operate at low water levels),” German said, as quoted from Inquirer.
“The dam provides 97% of Metro Manila’s water supply.” On July 2, Angat’s water level is 160.35 meters above sea level (masl), far below 180 masl critical level.
